Liz Truss To Become UK Third Female Prime Minister

The Conservative Party of Britain announced on Monday that Liz Truss, who is currently the country's foreign secretary, has been chosen as the new leader of the party and, therefore, the new prime minister of the U.K.

Truss, who is 47 years old, won a leadership race against Rishi Sunak, who was the former head of the Treasury. Only about 170,000 members of the Conservative Party who pay their dues were allowed to vote. Truss got 81,326 votes, while Sunak got 60,399 votes.

She is under immediate pressure to keep her promises to deal with the high cost of living in the U.K. and an economy that is headed for a possible long recession.

On Tuesday, Queen Elizabeth II will give Truss the official title of the prime minister of Britain. The ceremony will not take place at Buckingham Palace in London, but instead at the queen's summer home in Scotland, Balmoral.

The two-month leadership race left Britain without a leader at a time when people were getting more and more upset about rising energy and food prices.

Since July 7, when he said he was leaving office, Prime Minister Boris Johnson hasn't made any big policy decisions, and officials have said that anything to do with the high cost of energy will have to wait until his replacement is in place. (AP)
