2023 ELECTIONS: We will deal with vote-buying brokers and their families, says INEC Chairman, Yakubu
The National Electoral Commission (INEC) has assured Nigerians that in the 2023 elections it plans to crack down on vote-buyers, especially on election days.
The Chairman of INEC, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, said this when he was speaking at a meeting with the authorities involved in the matters of elections, security, corruption, and bribery on Monday, in Abuja.
Yakubu said, "We know it is very difficult, not easy, but INEC will try to stop those who give money to buy votes.
"Some will not be happy with the good work we are going to do to make the election clean. So they will also come up with their own strategy. However, INEC will cooperate with the police, EFCC, and other security agencies. so that they can help kill those who buy votes at the polling station or before the election day."
Yakubu called on all Nigerian voters to remember their vote and say their rights. Therefore, he told them to use their intelligence and vision, and stop selling their freedom for a few bucks that they will spend in one day.
He also instructed them to report vote-buyers to INEC and security officials. And he called on the rights groups to include the issue of exposing vote-buyers in the list of activities they will do before and on the day of the 2023 elections.
The agencies that organized the event in collaboration with INEC, include ICPC, EFCC, BBC, Nigeria Police Force and the Commission for the Determination of Marketing Systems of Nigeria (APCON).
