INEC Changed 16 Election Centers Due to Security Issues
The Independent Electoral Commission of Nigeria, INEC, has announced its plans to relocate sixteen election centers in three local governments facing security challenges in Yobe state.
The head of operations of the agency, Alhaji Goni Usman, disclosed this on Tuesday at a meeting of stakeholders in Damaturu, the capital of Yobe state.
He said the centers will be moved from Geidam, Yunusari, and Gujba local governments to places that are fully secure.
This means that the people of these local governments have to go to other local governments if they want to cast their votes.
Another major problem that Yobe state is facing in relation to the preparations for the 2023 election is the failure to receive new ballot papers from INEC.
After the 2019 election, there were more than 90 thousand newly registered voter cardholders across the state.
In his speech, the head of the technical department of the commission, Alhaji Lamido Ibrahim, said that the commission collected 93,912 old and new electoral cards from 2019 to this year.
He also added that, so far 49,399 units have been distributed, while the amount of 44,513 is in the hands of the agency as the owners have not received it.
Alhaji Lamido Ibrahim, also called on those who are eligible to vote who have not received their voting cards to hurry up to use them in the general election.
