Sojan the Swordsman is a part of the Eternal Champion. He is also known as Sojan the Shieldbearer. He fights with a sword and a pneumatic gun that works the same way as Jerry Cornelius' Needle Gun. He used to be a human named Sir John, but John died in battle on Earth and was reborn on Zylor with a new name, a new identity, and no memory of his past.
Sojan stands out because he uses a shield, which is something no one else on the planet Zylor does. Other warriors often treat Sojan as a coward because he uses a shield, but the shield's effectiveness and Sojan's skill in battle make them stop.
Sojan was one of the first characters that Moorcock wrote about. His first appearance in a story that was published came before Elric's.
