The Vatican announced the death of the 16th Pope, after suffering from illness.
Pope Benedict XVI was elected head of the Catholic Church in 2005 but in 2013 he made a new attempt to resign.
The German-born Pope Emeritus died in a Vatican monastery after his illness worsened. In the past, his successor, Pope Francis, called on the faithful to pray for Benedict.
Former Pope Benedict XVI, who was born in Germany, died at the age of 95 in the Vatican on Saturday. Earlier, his successor Pope Francis warned that Benedict was "very ill".
