The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) should enrich Nigeria with new banknotes or continue to convert old ones, says the Supreme Council of Predecessors
The Supreme Council of Nigeria, the Council of State, has requested the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to provide the country with new Naira notes or to allow the continued use of old notes.
This is coming after the Assembly concluded an emergency meeting at the Presidential Palace in Abuja where it requested the Central Bank of the country, CBN to produce more new currency notes to ease the situation of the people of the country.
According to the council, if the new currency will not be available, then the CBN will go back to giving the public the old currency notes.
The council, which is under the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari - called the meeting to discuss the current situation in the country as it approaches the general election.
The council consists of former presidents of Nigeria, presidents of the Senate and House of Representatives, and some ministers and governors of the country.
She also said that despite the problems faced, she supports the Central Bank's plan to reform the naira.
The Governor of Taraba State, Darius Ishaku who gave more information to the press said, "CBN has been advised to supply the country with new currency notes for the people or to re-issue the old money to end the suffering of the people. .”
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the National Electoral Commission, INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, briefed the parliament on the preparations for the General Election and he indicated that the commission has completed the plan for the elections to be held from the end of this month.
The Inspector-General of the Nigerian Police, Usman Alkali Baba, also informed the council about the security measures they are planning to take during the election.
