Naira redesign: CBN refutes claim on Aisha's page that "we stick to Buhari's directive"
A press statement uploaded on the Instagram account of the president's wife, Aisha Buhari, purporting to be from the Central Bank of Nigeria, or CBN, has been refuted by the bank.
According to the press release posted on Aisha's Facebook on Tuesday, the previous N500 and N1000 notes will continue to be valid until May 1, 2023.
The CBN, however, disproving the report, sent a second press release calling the one uploaded on Aisha's page "false news."
"CBN Adheres to Presidential Order to Reissue Only 200 Naira Old Banknotes," the statement said in part. The Central Bank of Nigeria has been alerted to a FALSE PRESS RELEASE claiming that President Muhammadu Buhari has authorized the reissue and release of old N500 and N1000 notes as legal tender in the nation. The CBN has been instructed to ONLY reissue and recirculate the old N200 banknotes, and this is expected to circulate as legal money for 60 days up to April 10, 2023. This is to minimize any confusion and to comply with Mr. President's broadcast from February 16, 2023.
Thus, the general public should dismiss any communication and/or information on this issue that has not been officially disseminated by the Central Bank of Nigeria.
The "false" release was still on Aisha Buhari's account when this article was filed, according to DAILY POST.
