Performers Honor Naomi Judd's Life During Special Funeral Ceremony
On May 7, 2017, members of the famed country vocal duo The Judds, Naomi Judd, were remembered and honored in Nashville. After a protracted struggle and battle with her mental health, Naomi passed away on April 30 of last year.
According to Country Insider, Naomi Judd herself selected all of the musical acts for the private funeral service, which included gospel, country, and rock. The late singer's youngest daughter, Ashley Judd, revealed that her mother had the entire service documented so they could avoid having to make assumptions.
Naomi's friend Dolly Parton, a fellow performer and legendary figure, was present. She wrote a touching and consoling message about family in her welcome letter.
Other performers at the ceremony were Ricky Skaggs, who sang "Talk About Suffering," The Imperials, who joined Naomi's husband Larry Strickler for "Sweet, Sweet Spirit," and the Oak Ridge Boys, who sang "Amazing Grace" and "Farther Away." Bono, the lead singer of U2, also made an appearance and read a poem aloud.
The Isaacs, a Southern gospel bluegrass band, sang three songs at the service: "Mama's Teaching Angels How to Sing," "I Know Who Holds Tomorrow," and "It Is Well With My Soul." Naomi's pastor at Christ Church Nashville, Dan Scott, offered the song "Ain't No Grave." Robert Weir of the Grateful Dead sang "Ripple" before gospel singer Guy Penrod sang "Knowing What I Know About Paradise."
In addition, Vince Gill performed Naomi's request, "Drifting Too Far From The Beach" by the Stanley Brothers. The singer expressed his gratitude for not having to perform "Go Rest High on That Mountain" at the service.
Mark, Naomi's younger brother, spoke before Ashley and Wynonna honored their mother on stage. Wynonna admitted in her speech that she was furious with her mother for not holding on so they could dance together one more time. She also reaffirmed that she would continue her tour as scheduled for later in the year. "You are familiar with me. I'll carry on singing. Although it will be lonely, I shall sing.
