Boat accident kills 5 in Kano
At least five people have died as a result of a boating accident in Kano State.
Kano State Police Spokesperson, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa confirmed the incident to TRT Afrika.
He explained that eight young people went to the Panshekara river where they boarded a boat, five of them died.
"On the 21st of the month, around 7:45, some eight young people from Fagge and Dala went to Panshekara river where they boarded a boat.
"While trying to cross this river, the boat overturned with seven people in it who fell into the water," said SP Kiyawa.
He added that two people were rescued, but five died and their bodies were found.
He said they were taken to Murtala Hospital where they were confirmed dead.
He also said that an investigation is currently being conducted on this matter.
Boating accidents are common in Kano and other parts of Nigeria.
Even in the past years, a boat capsized in Bagwai Local Government in Kano where about 30 people died.
In the same way in Kebbi State the boat overturned a few days ago where more than 100 people lost their lives.
Boat capsizing in Nigeria is linked to overloading and poor maintenance of the boats themselves.
