Jameson Williams among 5 NFL players given major suspensions for gambling

The NFL said on Friday that it has suspended five players for violating its gambling policy: Jameson Williams, Stanley Berryhill, Quintez Cephus, C.J. Moore, of the Detroit Lions, and Shaka Toney, of the Washington Commanders.

The league has imposed a 2023 NFL season-long suspension on Moore, Cephus, and Toney. Williams and Berryhill might be suspended for six games.

At the end of the 2023 season, Moore, Cephus, and Toney can submit an application for reinstatement, according to a statement from the league. The NFL further stated that their inquiry found no evidence of "inside information" being utilized by the players. The wagers were made on events taking place in the 2022 season:

The statement reads that Berryhill and Williams are "eligible to participate in all offseason and preseason activities, including preseason games." Their six-game bans will start the day after the last day of roster reduction.

Following the NFL's announcement, the Detroit Lions made their own further moves on Friday, releasing both Moore and Cephus.

Brad Holmes, executive vice president and general manager of the Detroit Lions, said in a statement from the team, "As a result of an NFL investigation, it came to our notice that a couple of our players had violated the league's gambling rules. These players made choices that were against our organizational ideals and against league regulations. We have decided to cut ties with Quintez and C.J. right away. We are disappointed in Stanley and Jameson's decision-making, and we will work with them both to make sure they comprehend the seriousness of these infractions and the league rules going forward.
