In 1999, he pleaded guilty to fraud and other crimes connected to manipulating the stock market and running a penny-stock scam.

Key Facts About Jordan Belfort

In the 1990s, Jordan Belfort worked in the stock market. At the end of the 1980s, he opened an OTC trading house called Stratton Oakmont.

In 1998, Jordan Belfort and one of his partners were arrested on charges of money laundering and stock fraud. The next year, he pleaded guilty to stock manipulation crimes. In 2003, he was given a four-year prison sentence, but he only did 22 months.

Because he had to pay a fine of more than $110 million, his net worth went down. But as of the time this was written, he had only paid about $14 million of the total.

The movie The Wolf of Wall Street, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Margot Robbie, is based on his memoir of the same name, which he wrote while he was in prison and had released in 2007. The book's follow-up, Catching the Wolf of Wall Street, came out in 2009, two years after the first one.

Way of the Wolf, his third book, came out in 2017.

Early Years

Jordan Belfort was born on July 9, 1962, in Queens, New York. He was born to Max and Leah, who are both accountants, and they are Jewish. Belfort got his Bachelor of Arts in Biology from American University.

He chose to go to the School of Dentistry at the University of Maryland. After his first day of college, he left because the school's head told him:

"Dentistry's golden age is over. If you're only here to make a lot of money, you're in the wrong place."

Career

Belfort grew up in an apartment in Queens, where he started his job as a salesman by selling seafood and meat.

He wanted to do something new with his sales skills, so in 1987 he became a stockbroker. In the 1990s, Belfort began his own business, Stratton Oakmont. He got a bad name because he tricked investors out of millions of dollars.

Jordan and his work partner Danny Porush used a "pump and dump" plan to make a lot of money. His agents helped drive up the prices of the stocks, and Stratton Oakmont would sell the stocks it owned at a good profit.

Belfort lived well because he had a lot of money. He spent a lot of money on toys, fast cars, and a big house. He started to use drugs more and more. One reason why he got into a few accidents, like when his helicopter crashed into his own boat, was because he was careless. How about that? His drug use led him to marry his second wife. Belfort started to treat his workers in a dangerous way. In Stratton Oakmont's buildings, it was common for people to play around, use drugs, and have sex.

In 2003, Belfort was given a four-year prison term and a $110 million fine. He went to jail for 22 months. One of his cellmates told him to write about what he had been through. After he spent many years in jail, he wrote a book called The Wolf of Wall Street.

Soon after he released his first book, he wrote Catching The Wolf of Wall Street, which was about his life after he got out of prison.

Today, Belfort works as a motivational speaker all over the world. He talks about how he became successful and what he did to get there. He runs his own business, which gives sales training and market straight-line training. In an interview with the Daily Mail, he said, "I used to be a wolf, but I changed into a nicer person."

Because of his criminal background and fines, Jordan Belfort's net worth is about -$100 Million as of April 2023.
