André the Giant's net worth was $10 million (adjusted for inflation) at the time of his passing in 1993. André the Giant was a French professional wrestler and actor. On May 19, 1946, André René Roussimoff, also known as André the Giant, was born in Grenoble, France. He is possibly most known for playing the enormous Fezzik in the movie The Princess Bride. He was known as The Eighth Wonder of the World because of his gigantic stature, which was the result of gigantism brought on by acromegaly.
Roussimoff once held both the title of WWF World Tag Team Champion and the title of WWF Champion in the World Wrestling Federation (now known as WWE). André was the first person to be inducted into the WWF Hall of Fame in 1993. At the age of 17, Roussimoff relocated to Paris where a local promoter who saw the financial potential in Roussimoff's physique taught him the ropes of professional wrestling. Roussimoff worked as a mover during the day and trained at night to support himself. Roussimoff started wrestling in Paris under the name Géant Ferré, which was derived from the name of a legendary French giant. The double underhook suplex, elbow drop, and sitdown splash were his "finishing moves." The bear grip, massive boot, body slam, chokehold, forehand chop, headbutt, knife-edge chop, and numerous turnbuckle thrusts were his trademark moves.
Billy Crystal, a buddy he met while working on The Princess Bride, used André as the basis for his 1998 film My Giant. He also acted in the movies Micki + Maude and Conan the Destroyer as Dagoth. He started showing signs of gigantism as a young child at a very young age, growing to a height of 6'3" and a weight of 240 pounds by the age of 12. He was driven to school by his neighbor, dramatist Samuel Beckett because he couldn't fit on the school bus. Despite being an excellent student, Roussimoff left school after the eighth grade to work on a farm. He finished his woodworking apprenticeship and went on to work in a facility that produced hay baler motors. None of these careers gave him fulfillment.
