Early years
Boston, Massachusetts is where Robert Barisford Brown was born on February 5, 1969. He is one of eight kids and was raised in the Roxbury neighborhood's Orchard Park Projects. When Brown was three years old, he saw a James Brown concert in his hometown, which sparked his desire to pursue a career as a performer. Later, he would join the choir at his church.
Brown experienced a violent and destitute upbringing. As a result of his parents limited financial resources—a construction worker and a substitute teacher—Brown and his buddies finally turned to theft. When one of his close friends was fatally murdered at the age of eleven, his life took a drastic shift.
New Edition was founded in 1981 by 12-year-old Brown and two of his boyhood pals. They became a quintet when their manager's nephew joined the group a year later. Candy Girl, the debut album by New Edition, peaked at #20 on the Billboard R&B Singles chart in 1983. Brown would subsequently admit that, despite the band's several lucrative tours, albums, and hits, he only made approximately "$500 and a VCR" while a member. In 1986, he disbanded the group to focus on his solo endeavors.
Success
King of Stage, Brown's debut solo album, was released in 1986 and did a passable amount of business. His second album, Don't Be Cruel (1988), did not become a worldwide phenomenon until he collaborated with R&B songwriters/producers Teddy Riley, L.A. Reid, and Babyface. In the end, more than 12 million copies of the record would be sold.
Brown rose to stardom in the 1980s and 1990s because of his singles, including "Don't Be Cruel" and "Humpin' Around," but in the late 1990s, his turbulent relationship with Whitney Houston obscured some of his musical success.
Brown made his acting debut in a cameo role as the Mayor's doorman in Ghostbusters II in 1989. Later, in 1990, he played all three members of the Three Blind Mice in the HBO children's program Mother Goose Rock 'n' Rhyme.
After Brown and New Edition reconnected for a performance at the 1990 MTV Video Music Awards, the trio went on to release the album Home Again in 1996. Brown agreed to a contract with Bravo in 2005 for the reality show Being Bobby Brown. The show was described as "unquestionably the most repulsive and execrable series to ever ooze its way onto television" by The Hollywood Reporter. Despite receiving negative reviews throughout its initial season, the program garnered Bravo its highest ratings during that specific time period. Houston refused to take part in a second season, leading to the cancellation of the show in 2006.
In 2008, Derrick Handspike's autobiography Bobby Brown: The Truth, the Whole Truth, and Nothing But was scheduled for release. Brown withdrew from the project when contentious remarks he had made about Houston were released to the public. The book was eventually published by Handspike after Houston's passing.
Private life
Unfortunately, Brown's personal life spiraled out of control just as his musical career was at its pinnacle. He earned a reputation for being a womanizer and heavy partyer.
On July 18, 1992, Brown and Houston exchanged vows at Houston's mansion. Bobbi Kristina, the couple's lone child, was born in 1993. Heavy drinking, drug use, infidelity, and domestic violence-plagued their 15-year marriage. Brown was detained several times, including for DUI, assault, and other offenses. The couple's private problems provided the tabloids with a tonne of fodder, and their marriage eventually ended in divorce in 2007.
In 2009, Brown and Alicia Etheredge, his manager and girlfriend of two years, welcomed a son, Cassius. They got hitched in Hawaii in June 2012 after becoming engaged in May 2010. They gave birth to two girls after getting married: Bodhi Jameson Rein in 2015 and Hendrix Estelle Sheba in 2016.
