Daniel Michael DeVito Jr. was born on November 17, 1944, in Neptune Township, New Jersey. He is only 4 feet, 10 inches tall because he has multiple epiphyseal dysplasia, also called Fairbank's disease. This is a rare genetic trait that affects bone growth and is the reason for his short height. He grew up in Asbury Park, New Jersey, with his two older sisters. DeVito comes from Italy and was brought up as a Catholic.
Career Beginnings
He went to private school and in 1962 got his diploma from Oratory Preparatory School in Summit, New Jersey. When he was in high school, he started playing for the first time by taking part in school productions of "St. Francis of Assisi" and "The Billion Dollar Saint." He started working at his sister's shop after he graduated from high school. He thought it would be a good way to meet girls. After working there for 18 months, he chose to switch jobs because he could make more money selling cosmetics. So, he sent in an application to the American Academy of Dramatic Arts.
