Muslims traditionally look at the crescent or new moon to find out when the tenth Islamic month of Shawwal begins. This marks the end of the month-long fasting of Ramadan and the start of the Eid-ul-Fitr festival. The new moon is usually seen with the naked eye or through a telescope. Once the sighting is confirmed, the news is usually spread through the media, mosques, and other community groups. Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic Lunar Calendar, and Shawwal is the tenth.
