The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys comic miniseries and the Eisner Award-winning comic book The Umbrella Academy were both written by Gerard Way. One of the few key musicians credited with bringing emo and punk music into the mainstream at the turn of the millennium and successfully starting a million conversations about what is and is not considered punk in the process is Gerard Way, the charismatic, pale-faced frontman of dynamic punk-rock band My Chemical Romance. When he was younger, he was more reserved than his gregarious, boisterous sibling. Way drew and listened to bands like Iron Maiden, the Smiths, the Cure, the Misfits, and Queen while spending a lot of time by himself. Way enrolled in the School of Visual Arts in New York after graduating from high school to study cartooning and illustration. He worked as an intern at DC Comics for a while. After receiving his bachelor's in fine arts, he eventually found employment doing animation and toy design.
Even though Way had performed in a few unrelated bands throughout the years, he had always wanted to be in one. However, it wasn't until the September 11th attacks that he felt inspired to make a difference in the world. He was in his office when the World Trade Towers fell, and he saw it personally. As a result, he began to wonder what impact he was having on the situation. Soon after, in the basement of his parents' house, he wrote the song Skylines and Turnstiles about the 9/11 events. Once Way found drummer Matt Pelissier from high school, they added guitarist Ray Toro, Mikey Way's brother on bass, and second guitarist Frank Iero, and My Chemical Romance recorded their debut album three months after the band's formation. The band's CD was released in 2002 by local independent Eyeball Records. Hesitant Alien, Gerard Way's first solo album, was slated for release on Warner Bros. Records in September 2014.
