American actor John Allen Amos Jr. is best known for his role as James Evans Sr. on the CBS TV show Good Times.

Amos has also been in a number of other TV shows, like The Mary Tyler Moore Show and The West Wing, where he played Admiral Percy Fitzwallace. In The District, he played Washington, DC Mayor Ethan Baker.

Amos has been an actor for more than 50 years and has been on Broadway and in many films.
He has been nominated for both a Primetime Emmy Award and an NAACP Image Award. Amos has had small parts in films like The Beastmaster (1982), Coming to America (1988), Die Hard 2 (1990), and Coming 2 America (2021).

Before becoming an actor, Amos played football in college at Colorado State University and for a short time in the pros. In 1967, he played for the Kansas City Chiefs of the American Football League during the summer.

John Amos's Life in Football

In 1964, the Denver Broncos of the American Football League signed Amos as a free agent. However, he couldn't run the 40-yard dash because of a pulled leg, so he was let go on the second day of training camp.
Then, in 1965, he played for the Canton Bulldogs and the Joliet Explorers in the United Football League. In the Continental Football League, he played for the Norfolk Neptunes and the Wheeling Ironmen.

The next year, he played in the Atlantic Coast Football League for the Jersey City Jets and the Waterbury Orbits. He became a free agent in 1967 and signed with the Kansas City Chiefs of the American Football League.

But teacher Hank Stram wasn't sure about his football skills and said he was just a man who was trying to play football.
John Allen Amos Jr.'s Wife and Kids: Amos has been married twice and has two children. From 1965 to 1975, he was married to artist and horse rider Noel Mickelson. He has two children with her: Shannon Amos, a writer/producer and founder of Afterglow Multimedia, LLC, and K.C. Amos, who has been nominated for a Grammy.

From 1978 to 1979, he was married to actress Lillian Lehman.
