Actor and musician Leif Garrett was born in Hollywood, California, in 1961. In 1969, he made his acting debut as a young child in the films Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice, and Nanny and the Professor. Later, he appeared in Westerns like Kid Vengeance (1977) and Diamante Lobo (1976). Atlantic Records extended him a recording contract, and he went on to release two oldies cover singles and an album titled "Feel the Need," which featured the top 10 disco song "I Was Made for Dancin'." A few of Garrett's more prominent roles include Jimmy Henderson in Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice (1969), Mike Pusser, the protagonist's son in the Walking Tall films (1973, 1975, 1977), and Zack Russell on ABC TV series Family. In the ABC television series The Odd Couple, he also played Leonard Unger, the son of Felix Unger (Tony Randall), replacing Willie Aames in the role.

Late in 1975, Garrett made an appearance as Endy Karras in the 12-week CBS drama series Three for the Road, which also starred Alex Rocco as Peter Karras, his father, and Vincent Van Patten as John Karras, his elder brother. Grieving after the loss of their mother and wife, a father and his two kids sell their home, purchase a camper vehicle, and travel across America in the plot. Teenage ladies responded to Garrett's involvement in the show, which resulted in his first appearances in adolescent publications like Tiger Beat. In the spaghetti westerns Kid Vengeance (it) and God's Gun, which were primarily filmed in Israel, Garrett co-starred with Lee Van Cleef. He appeared in the movie Skateboard as well.

Garrett began recording for Atlantic Records in late 1976, releasing the single "Come Back When You Grow Up" and beginning work on his debut LP, "Leif Garrett," in early 1977. His first four songs from the album, which was released in July 1977, did not do particularly well on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. These songs were all covers of popular songs from the late 1950s and early 1960s, including "Runaround Sue" and "The Wanderer." He recorded his second album, Feel the Need, after signing with Scotti Brothers Records in the middle of 1978. Early in 1979, its debut single, "I Was Made for Dancin'," peaked at number 4 in the UK and at number 10 on the US Hot 100. In the US and the UK, it turned into his biggest success. He continued to record and quickly followed up with the albums Same Goes For You (1979), Can't Explain (1980), and My Movie of You (1981). Subsequent songs were unsuccessful in breaking into the Top 20 in either country. Early in the 1980s, he largely stopped making music recordings and spent the rest of the decade focusing on acting. Later, he alleged that when he was in his early 20s, the producers would not permit him to create songs for an adult audience. He contributed lead vocals to the song "The Way to Happiness" and backing vocals to the album's title track by L. Ron Hubbard in 1986.

Garrett acknowledged that he first used drugs at the age of 14. Garrett crashed a Porsche 914 that was being leased to his mother on November 3, 1979, five days before he turned 18 years old, as he was en route to buy more cocaine. He was high on quaaludes and his blood alcohol level was three times the current legal limit. Roland Winkler, who was his best friend and passenger, was paralyzed as a result of the tragedy. Winkler and Garrett were not restrained by seatbelts. Garrett was later charged with drunk driving and tried as a juvenile; he received a year's probation and a driver's license suspension. In January 1980, Winkler filed a lawsuit, alleging Garrett was to blame for the mishap.
1980
Early in the 1980s, Garrett made a comeback as an actor, making an appearance as Bob Sheldon in the Francis Ford Coppola movie The Outsiders from 1983. He appeared in Shaker Run as a mechanic and Thunder Alley as the main singer of a pop band that is torn apart by drugs in 1985. Delta Fever and the slasher flick Cheerleader Camp are two further noteworthy Leif Garrett films from the decade. In Party Line, he portrayed a murderer who was insanely in love with his sister.
1984
Garrett's insurance company, Transamerica Insurance Co., was ordered by Los Angeles Superior Court in December 1984 to pay Winkler $3.9 million. Jurors calculated $4,215,500 in total damages in the civil negligence case, but they deducted 8% of that figure, or $337,240, on the grounds that Winkler caused his own injuries by deciding to ride in a vehicle with a drunk driver. Both Garrett and Winkler admitted in court that they had used beer and depressive drugs while intoxicated; the court heard that they had each had an equal amount of both that evening. The panel ruled that Winkler's share of the blame did not reduce the $15,000 in punitive damages that Garrett was required to pay. Edward Steinbrecher, Winkler's lawyer, explained that Garrett's testimony that his net worth was only $50,000 to $100,000 was the reason for the comparatively low punitive damage verdict. With the Premier Insurance Co., which had insured the business renting the Porsche to Garrett's mother, Winkler reached a $6 million settlement in 1987.

Garrett was detained by Los Angeles police on June 29, 1999, in the MacArthur Park neighborhood after it was claimed that he attempted to purchase cocaine and heroin from undercover detectives. A Los Angeles judge issued an arrest warrant for him in March 2001 after he neglected to appear in court for a progress report that was necessary due to his 1999 conviction. Two days later, once Garrett provided proof that he had successfully completed a recovery program, the judge released the warrant and dismissed the 1999 accusations.
2000
Garrett has performed on stage in a number of productions, including Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and A Child's Christmas in Wales, which was presented by the National Theatre of the Deaf in late 2000. In the 2003 David Spade movie Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star, Garrett played himself. Additionally, he was one of the singers for "Child Stars on Your Television," which played over the closing credits, and co-wrote and sang "Former Child Star" for the soundtrack of the movie. In 2004, he was detained for having cocaine in his possession. He was sentenced to probation after entering a guilty plea to attempted possession of cocaine-based drugs in March 2005. A warrant for his arrest was issued when he neglected to show up for a status report in court in December 2005. Garrett was found to be in possession of heroin when he was apprehended by police on a Los Angeles Metro Rail platform on January 14, 2006. He was stopped for not having a ticket. He was detained without bail due to an outstanding warrant for breaking probation in connection with a cocaine-related offense. His release from custody was mandated after he consented to enroll in an intense drug diversion program. After being found to have failed multiple drug tests while residing in a live-in drug diversion program, a Superior Court commissioner concluded he fell out of the recovery program and was hauled back into custody on March 30. Garrett admitted that he needed more assistance. On May 11, he was given a sentence of 90 days in jail and three years of probation for not completing a court-ordered drug rehabilitation program. He received credit for the time served in jail as of March 30.
2007
Garrett's album Three Sides of..., which included songs he recorded with both his current band F8 and his 1990s band Godspeed as well as some brand-new tracks, was published in November 2007.
2008
Garrett joined the cast of The Smoking Gun Presents: World's Dumbest... in 2008, a TruTV program that provides humorous comments from famous people who have run afoul of the law. Garrett routinely parodies his tumultuous past and takes part in a number of sketches and skits that the show's creators have developed especially for him. In a 2010 episode, Todd Bridges, another series regular, played a police officer as Garrett reenacted his most recent arrest.

Garrett was detained once more for drug possession on February 1, 2010. He initially told authorities he didn't have any narcotics, but then confessed to having black tar heroin in his shoe. He was accused of possessing heroin in a felony, but he posted a $10,000 bond. On October 18, 2010, Garrett attended a court-ordered rehabilitation program after entering a no-contest plea to heroin possession in Los Angeles.
