NNPC will resume oil exploration in Borno state
Nigeria's oil company, NNPC, says it will start drilling for crude oil near Lake Chad again next week. This is almost 5 years after the operation was stopped because terrorist groups were getting more active.
In an interview with the Nigerian Daily Trust, Malam Mele Kyari, the head of the NNPC, said that President Muhammadu Buhari gave a straight order to start oil exploration again in Borno state.
Mele Kyari, the head of NNPC, said that the successful finding of oil in the Kolmani river between the states of Gombe and Bauchi in November of last year encouraged the company to keep looking for oil in Lake Chad.
Mele Kyari said that finding oil in Kolmani helped a lot with finding oil in Nassarawa state. Because of this, he had to keep looking for oil in Borno state.
The CEO of NNPC said that strict steps will be taken to protect their workers while they are extracting oil in Borno state, which is being attacked by the terrorist group Boko Haram.
Reports say that President Muhammadu Buhari ordered oil digging to start up again in the Lake Chad area a year ago.
