More than 2000 prisoners of war were released by Myanmar's military government as a way of honoring Buddha's birthday.
According to a statement made by the army, 2,153 inmates who had been held there since the army assumed control in February 2021 have been freed.
More than 21,000 protesters who took to the streets after the military toppled Aung San Suu Kyi's administration are currently incarcerated.
According to the UN, there are also at least 170 journalists who are detained. The court found the former leader of Myanmar guilty of numerous crimes, and she is currently serving a sentence of more than 33 years in prison.
The declaration follows a meeting between the foreign ministers of China and Myanmar.
