On May 16, Ousmane Sonko, the head of the opposition in Senegal, will return to court to face charges of raping a woman.

The opposition leader will come before the court in Dakar on Tuesday, May 16, where he will continue to be heard, according to the attorney defending Sonko's wife, who is charged with rape.

The court sentenced Ousmane Sonko to two months in prison and a fine of 200 million CFA, which is equivalent to 300,000 euros, in the first indictment against him for allegedly speaking untruths to a minister. His attorneys claim that this second indictment won't have any bearing on his bid for office in the upcoming national election in 2024.

Ousmane Sonko, 48, is close friends with Senegal's president-elect Macky Sall, who has expressed interest in seeking a third term in office. the constitution, which states that he can't run for reelection after serving two terms.
