The Federal Government has issued a license to open a home learning university and 37 others
The federal government has approved the granting of licenses to 37 new universities in Nigeria.
The universities received the relief during a special session held by the Nigerian Executive Council on Monday.
The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, disclosed this to the press at the Government House after an emergency meeting chaired by the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, at the Presidential Palace in Abuja.
He added that the number of new universities so far has reached 72 that the Buhari government has given their licenses since 2015.
However, the minister did not reveal the names of the universities, stating that one of them is an online university, which is the first independent university of its kind in Nigeria owned by a woman from Bauchi state.
According to him, it is expected that the University will take responsibility for Muslim women from the North who do not want or are prevented from entering the Universities we have to study.
When asked if the additional universities are really useful considering the challenges of funding, Adamu explained that the new universities are all private, they have enough funds to run them, so they should not be denied the opportunity to produce them.
Apart from that, the minister added that "Nigeria actually needs more universities because the existing ones are not enough to accommodate all the applicants."
