Early Years

Tyler Gregory Okonma was born on March 6, 1991, in the city of Ladera Heights, which is near Los Angeles. His mother is part African-American and part European-Canadian. His father is from Nigeria, but he has never met him. Most of his childhood was spent in Ladera Heights and Hawthorne, which are both in the Greater Los Angeles area. As a child, he used the record covers to make his own track lists and cover art. When he was 14 years old, seven years later, he taught himself to play the piano. In 2007, Tyler, Hodgy Beats, Left Brain, and Casey Veggies got together to form the hip-hop group Odd Future. Their first mixtape, "The Odd Future Tape," came out on its own in late 2008. Tyler's first solo mixtape, "Bastard," came out on his own on December 25, 2009. Pitchfork Media's pick of the Top Albums of 2010 put "Bastard" at number 32.
