EU: Foundation for humanitarian aid in Syria
The European Union has set up a worldwide foundation to help millions of Syrians who have been affected by the war since 2011.
Antonio Guterres, who is the Secretary-General of the United Nations, spoke at the meeting. He asked wealthy countries to help save the lives of the Syrian people from the terrible position they were in.
"He said that what I want is easy. Help us help the people of Syria, please. We need $1.1 billion. This is the biggest fund we've ever started, and we can't wait any longer."
This is the seventh meeting held by the European Union offices in Brussels to support the future of Syria and the region as a whole. It is also the first time since Syria rejoined the Arab League after the terrible earthquake at the beginning of this year.
The European Union has said it will give 560 million euros, which is equal to 600 million dollars.
Last year, $6.7 billion was raised at the event. Now, the UN hopes that the European Union and its member states, which are doing the most to help people in Syria and the area, will talk more.
