I am not the only one who asked for a third term - Obasanjo

Olusegun Obasanjo, who used to be president of Nigeria, said that he only needed a third term, as was said because the governors he worked with at the time also asked for the law to be changed so that they could stay in power.

Obasanjo has denied the claims that he tried to get a third term, which was turned down by parliament. He also said that the leaders of the states during his time in office were the ones who tried to change the Constitution but failed.

The former president said that at the time, the governors of the states seemed to be looking for a chance to close the gap, but the truth is that they were really looking for themselves because as soon as the parliament approved the request, they also got the chance they needed.

In 2006, people tried to change the constitution, but the Nigerian National Assembly, led by Speaker Ken Nnamani, said no.

Nnamani told reporters that they did what they did to protect Nigeria's democracy by giving up their political posts. They did this because they are sure that President Obasanjo will look into them for stopping him from becoming president.
