A truck accident killed dozens of people in Kenya

According to authorities and witnesses, a truck hauling containers drove off the road in Kenya's Rift Valley and struck numerous vehicles, killing at least 48 people.

In a popular area in the west of the country, a truck went off the road and hit dozens of automobiles and pedestrians, killing at least 48 people, according to Kenyan police and witnesses.

The event took place on Friday in the Kericho provincial district of Londiani.

The disaster, according to President William Ruto, was tragic and included "young people" as victims.

Geoffrey Mayek, a police officer in the neighbourhood, told the AFP news agency that "48 people have died so far and it is feared that there are still one or two people trapped under the car."

He cautioned that the death toll could grow by stating that the tragedy left more than 30 people critically hurt and transported quickly to the hospital.

Mayek stated, "We assume there was a truck being driven... that was on its way to Kericho when it braked and collided with a small automobile in a parking lot.

Senior physician Collins Kipkoech of Kericho Hospital reported that as of the time of his interview, 45 dead had been brought there; others had also been transported to other hospitals, and "the rescue operation is still ongoing."

The images from the nation's television reveal how the truck struck the compact vehicles at the well-known Londiani junction.

Rescue efforts have reportedly been hampered by heavy rains, according to the national media.
