ECOWAS has given Niger's army one week to hand over power
The leaders of the West African countries have given the soldiers who seized power in Niger a week to withdraw, while they have imposed economic and financial sanctions on the country.
The 15-member Economic Development Organization of West Africa, ECOWAS, has demanded the immediate release of President Mohamed Bazoum and his return to his seat after the army overthrew his government and detained him since last Wednesday.
A statement released by ECOWAS after an emergency meeting held in Abuja said that it will take all necessary measures to restore the constitution in Niger as long as the army fails to respect the group's order within a week.
ECOWAS said that it may use force among the series of measures that it said it would take against the Nigerien soldiers who had staged a coup d'état.
ECOWAS has announced the suspension of all commercial and financial activities between it and the Republic of Niger which is also a member of the West African Union.
ECOWAS has also said that it will freeze the assets of Niger and the country's commercial banks and prohibit the military that couped the coup from traveling to foreign countries.
