FG Set To Review Broadcast Code, May Increase Licence Fee

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) will review the The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) will shortly meet with broadcasting sector stakeholders to examine the Nigeria Broadcasting Code as it considers raising television and radio station licencing costs.

At a Lagos press conference on Tuesday, NBC Director General Malam Balareba Shehu Ilelah revealed this.

Ilelah announced that the broadcast code would be modified once all industry stakeholders had provided feedback during the press conference announcing Lagos' hosting of Africast, the African broadcast exhibition, from October 24 to 26.

The Nigeria Broadcasting Code will be reviewed with input from industry stakeholders. The NBC DG also considered raising TV and radio station broadcast licences.

As a regulator, the NBC would make sure broadcasters followed the law.

Dr. Yemisi Bamgbose, Executive Secretary of the Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria (BON), recommended NBC against raising broadcast licence prices at the news conference.

Bamgbose said the broadcast business needs a lifeline and that raising licencing fees or other taxes could destroy numerous stations.

I implore the DG and NBC not to raise the licence fee immediately. "Broadcasters are already having a hard time, so I don't think this is the best time to increase their licence fee or any other fees," the BON writer stated.

The 2016 Nigeria Broadcast Code, revised in 2020, governs the sector and its practitioners, according to Daily Trust.
