Former Zamfara governor Sani Yerima begs Tinubu to hold meetings with bandits and others over insecurity
Sani Yerima, a former governor of Zamfara state, has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to speak with the thugs terrorizing Nigeria in order to put an end to the problem of insecurity.
Yerima, who enacted Sharia law in Zamfara in 1999, made this recommendation during a Saturday interview with BBC Hausa.
He suggested that the president hold talks with the bandits in the same way that the late Umaru Musa Yar'Adua held talks with militants in the Niger Delta.
"I'm advising the government to find some time to sit down with these outlaws, much like they did with insurgents in the Niger Delta in the past. Even though there are some foreigners among them, most of them are Nigerians," Yerima remarked.
However, Nigerians among them may be persuaded, just as terrorists in the Niger Delta were persuaded and given the authority to cease.
"If that fails," Yerima continued, "then the government can use force on them wherever they are."
Yerima asserted his great belief in the capabilities of Nigerian security forces to manage the country's security situation with the right backing and added that they had all the resources required to do so.
He stressed that only illiterate people would take up arms and slaughter innocent people, identifying illiteracy and poverty as the main forces behind people turning to banditry.
The senator emphasized the necessity for leaders to find solutions to these issues by noting that poverty and illiteracy were the main causes of crises and problems in the nation.
He also criticized politicians who choose to steal billions from public coffers for their own gain rather than dealing with people's issues.
He urged Nigerians to be patient with the incoming administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and reassured them that progress would be made before the conclusion of his term.
