 Girl Up 2024 Scholarship Fund For Post-Secondary School Education


Girl Up 2024 Scholarship  The application for the Girl Up Scholarship Fund is open to self-identified girls, young women, and gender non-conforming youth of all nationalities and origins who were given the gender of a female at birth. 

About Girl Up

All people, regardless of gender identity, sexual orientation, colour, religion, cultural and ethnic heritage, disability, or any other trait protected by law, are welcome to apply for the Girl Up Scholarship Fund.


Girl Up is committed to closing the gender gap and dismantling obstacles in all places. The new Girl Up Scholarship Fund, backed by partners and sponsors, recognises young leaders' unrelenting dedication to improving the world for all girls, everywhere.


The UN Foundation launched Girl Up in 2010 as a project to support UN organisations that concentrate on adolescent girls. The power of girls to change the world is enormous and frequently unexplored. Girl Up empowers girls to discover their inner strength and use it to advance the abilities, rights, and opportunities of all girls.  85,500 girls have benefited from Girl Up's leadership development programmes through 4,500 Clubs in nearly 125 countries and all 50 states of the United States. We are influencing a generation of girls to be agents of social change and gender equality.


The purpose and advantages of the Girl Up Post-secondary Scholarship

1. The purpose of a Girl Up Scholarship is to lessen the financial burden of post-secondary education for members of the Girl Up Community and to support the academic success of students who are striving to advance gender equality. Girl Up will give away $87,500 in scholarships in 2021 ($2,500 to at least 35 winners). 

2. The power of girls to change the world is enormous and frequently unexplored. Girl Up empowers girls to discover their inner strength and use it to advance the abilities, rights, and opportunities of all girls. More than ever, we believe in the power of girls to make a difference. To that end, we support Girl Up members who are interested in pursuing higher education in order to close the gender gap in industries like storytelling, STEM, and sports. 


Qualifications for the Girl Up Post-secondary Scholarship

The Girl Up Scholarship is open to any self-identified girl or woman who: 


Is a Girl Up participant (e.g., a programme participant, club member, event goer, etc.) 

1. At the time of funds release, is enrolled in a 2-year, 4-year, or technical college (high school seniors may apply!) 

Is pursuing a certain field in certain categories: 

3. Storytelling - pursuing careers in related or storytelling/communications-related industries; 

4. A passion for sports, ambitions to utilise sports as a platform for advocacy, or interest in athletics or a field related to sports. 

5. STEM - studying subjects linked to science, technology, engineering, and maths

6. Has no ties to the UN Foundation that could create a conflict of interest with any of its employees. 

7. NOTE: The application for the Girl Up Scholarships is open to applicants from all nationalities. Those who identify as first-generation Americans, Black or African-Americans, Latinx, undocumented, DACA, and/or have a disability are strongly urged to apply. 


Date, Method, and Location of the Interview for the Girl Up Post-secondary Scholarship

Weighting will be used to create a competitive and fair evaluation process. Selection standards will comprise: 


1. Proven dedication to gender equality 

2. Capability to lead 

3. Participating in community and school activities 

4. The challenges and ambitions for your education and career 

5. Academic record (such as GPA) 

Background of the applicant (e.g., financial necessity, first-generation status, DACA, disability, etc.) 

7. A recommendation letter from a professional—a teacher, a mentor, etc.—and not a relative

Essay 1: Describe your community of origin and how it affected your upbringing, values, experiences, and educational aspirations in no more than 500 words. What was the toughest challenge you ever faced? Girl Up is committed to diversity and inclusion in all of its manifestations and values the nuanced and diverse identities of all of its supporters. 


Essay 2: In no more than 250 words, explain how this scholarship will assist you advance your professional, academic, and/or personal goals. How can STEM, sports or storytelling promote gender equality? 


Essay 3: How have you achieved gender equality in your community in 250 words or less? What aspects of your capacity for leadership have you displayed via these endeavours? 


Storytelling in Essay 4 Candidates: Give an example of how you engage in storytelling (journalism, news broadcasting, poetry, etc.) in 500 words or fewer. How did you use storytelling to make a change in your community? How has your background in storytelling helped you grow as a leader? 


Applicants in sports: Give an example of how you are active in sports (as a participant, spectator, fan, etc.) in 500 words or fewer. How have you used sports as a platform to make change in your community? How has playing sports helped you grow as a leader? 


STEM Candidates: Give an example of how you are involved in STEM (your field of study, your club, your job, etc.) in 500 words or fewer. How have you used STEM as a platform to make change in your community? How has STEM helped you become a better leader?
