On Sunday night in New York City, Gloria Carter, the mother of Jay-Z, got married to her longtime companion Roxanne Wilshire.
Beyoncé, Kelly Rowland, Tina Knowles-Lawson, Tyler Perry, and Robin Roberts were reportedly present at the star-studded Tribeca wedding and reception, which according to sources ended at one in the morning.
On "Smile," a song from his 2017 album 4:44, Jay-Z talked about his mother coming out to him.
In his rap, he said, "Mama had four kids, but she's a lesbian/Had to lie for so long that she's a thespian/Had to hide in the closet, so she medicated/Society humiliation and the anguish was too much to bear.

When he learned that his mother had fallen in love, Jay-Z admitted in an interview with David Letterman for the Netflix series My Next Guest Needs No Introduction that he had cried with delight.

"I truly sobbed when she told me, 'I think I love someone,' sitting in front of me...I sobbed because I was so relieved for her to be free.
