More than 1,800 terrorist attacks in West Africa in 2023 - ECOWAS
According to the West African Economic Development Organisation, the topic of strengthening the security forces in the area will be discussed in order to address the issue of insecurity and the coup danger.
More than 1,800 attacks were reported in West Africa in the first half of 2023, which led to the deaths of roughly 4,600 people and complicated humanitarian efforts.
Omar Touray, the head of ECOWAS, said to the UN Security Council on Tuesday that 6.2 million people within the 15 member states of the organisation are internally displaced, and over 500,000 of those are refugees.
He also said that by the end of August, the 30 million people in the region in need of food would rise to 42 million if the international community does nothing.
Touray, the leader of ECOWAS, laid the responsibility for the crimes on things like armed militants, unauthorised regime transitions, environmental issues, and the dissemination of false information that fuels insecurity in the region.
