After the Eid-el Kabir break, the Senate will get back to work on Tuesday.
News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) says that when the upper house starts up again, leaders of the majority and the minority are likely to emerge. The opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is likely to produce the minority leader, while the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) will produce the majority leader.
PDP has 36 senators, while APC has 59. Other parties with one senator each are the Labour Party (LP), the Social Democratic Party (SDP), the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), the Young Peoples Party (YPP), and the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).
This shows that the 10th Senate is made up of people from seven different political groups, with 50 of them being from the opposition.
The minority caucus and the party in power, the APC, are also expected to fill the eight principal posts that are still open.
While the APC is likely to have the majority leader, deputy majority leader, chief whip, and deputy chief whip, the minority caucus has the minority leader, deputy minority leader, minority whip, and deputy minority whip.
As the main opposition group, PDP is expected to provide the minority leader, deputy leader, minority whip, and deputy minority whip.
Parties with the most seats in the Senate are the only ones who can make nominations for these posts.
NAN's research shows that Sen. Opeyemi Bamidele (APC-Ekiti) and Sen. Mohammed Ndume (APC-Borno) are the two main candidates for the post of Senate majority leader.
The two were important parts of Senate President Godswill Akpabio's bid to become president of the Senate.
Akpabio's campaign group was run by Ndume and Bamidele. Ndume was the general director and Bamidele was the deputy.
Also running for the minority leader seat are Sen. Adamu Aliero (PDP-Kebbi) and Sen. Aminu Tambuwal (PDP-Sokoto). (NAN)
