The Jigawa state government said it has bought two machines which it will use to drain the rivers of the state to avoid flooding across the state.

The governor of the state, Mallam Umar Namadi, said this during an interview with the BBC.

Malam Namadi told the BBC that "Most of the things that cause us to flood is that the rivers that we have, Tiga and Chalawa, are full, they have not been abandoned for a long time, so it must cause flooding".

He added that "the two rivers were built based on the promise that they will carry about one billion liters of water, but now about 700 million liters does not have a place to enter the rivers, so it has to come out and create a way for itself, the reason That's why there are floods in Jigawa state''

After the two machines bought by the state government, the governor said that the Hadejia/Jamaare river management agency has provided the state with two more machines to help in draining the rivers of the state to deal with the flood.

Mallam Umar Namadi also said that the state government has taken steps to build dams in flood prone areas so as to reduce the flow of water.

"Right now, we have built about 85 kilometers of the road, and the work is going on," said the governor.

Jigawa state is one of the states in Nigeria that floods caused a lot of damage last year, the situation caused broken bridges and damaged roads, with the loss of crops worth millions of dollars.
