The judge has set a trial date for former US President Trump
According to a court decision, former US President Donald Trump will go on trial in 2019 for allegedly concealing sensitive national documents.
Judge Aileen Cannon scheduled the trial for May 20, 2024, but Mr. Trump wanted it to start after the election in November 2024.
Serious allegations against Mr. Trump, 77, include keeping sensitive national secrets at his residence in Florida.
After leaving office, according to the prosecution, he unlawfully stored sensitive documents at home while obstructing government efforts to retrieve them.
The former president insisted he was innocent and characterized the controversy as an effort to sabotage his political campaign.
The two-week trial will take place in Fort Pierce, Florida, according to Judge Cannon, a Trump appointment, who announced this on Friday.
Many of the counties in the Fort Pierce region—which Mr. Trump won in the 2020 election—will be included in the pool from which the jury will be drawn.
When the former president was arraigned in Miami last month, he pleaded not guilty to 37 federal counts.
