We are on the verge of ending the coup in Africa - ECOWAS

ECOWAS leaders have again pledged to crush all coup attempts in the region to preserve democracy and allow the people to pick their leaders.

After a special summit in Abuja, the leaders of Nigeria, Niger, Guinea Bissau, Benin, and the organization's head, Omar Alieu Touray, announced this.

The leaders appointed Benin's President Patrice Talon to lead the continent's ruling army and presented their plan to hold elections to restore democracy in their countries.

The one-day leaders summit also announced the ECOWAS proposal to replace UN soldiers who left Mali with ECOWAS troops.

After the French troops withdrew, the UN agreed to remove its forces from Mali as requested by the government.

Mali, Guinea, and Burkina Faso are military-ruled countries.
