Boko Haram has released 49 women it kidnapped
The Boko Haram group has released 49 women it captured and held hostage in Borno state in the northwest of Nigeria.
The women were able to breathe the air of freedom last Friday after the state officials paid a ransom to retrieve them.
Some residents of the area, who asked to remain anonymous, confirmed to Reuters that the women were abducted while they were working on a farm in Shuwaei Kawuri village in the suburbs of Maiduguri.
One of the hostages said that the members of the Boko Haram group told them that they released them because of the ransom payment made by their brothers.
The members of the group demanded to be paid 3 million 391 thousand naira before the release of the women, which made the state officials pay 1 million naira before releasing them.
Boko Haram fighters have been kidnapping people in Borno state for a long time to collect ransom money.
