 Diphtheria kills 122 children in Nigeria - Unicef


The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) said that diphtheria has killed 122 children in Nigeria as of July.


Ms Safiya Akau, the media representative of Nigeria, said UNICEF is increasing its efforts to prevent the spread of the disease which affects children in 27 states.


Asthma is a respiratory disease that can be fatal.


Ms Akau said that out of the 3,850 tests done in July, 1,387 people were confirmed to have the disease.


She said that 98 percent of the patients are from the states of Kano, Yobe, Katsina, Lagos, Sokoto, Zamfara and the Federal Capital, Abuja.


She also pointed out that 71.5 percent of those infected are children between the ages of two and 14.
