Ethiopia plans to impose martial law in the Amhara region
Ethiopia's executive council has approved the establishment of martial law in the Amhara region after days of fighting between the country's army and armed groups.
The move comes a day after the president of the region, Yilkal Kefale, called on the federal government to take action, saying that "the security agencies have failed to enforce the law in the region".
According to reports, the Fano militant group has seized control of many villages and some major cities.
Telephone lines were cut, and air traffic was limited in some cities in the region.
The statement issued by the Prime Minister's office said that there is a need to declare a state of emergency in order to restore peace and security in the region.
The national parliament must approve it before taking the decision to enact the law.
