The Ethiopian government has declared a state of emergency after days of fighting in the Amhara region between the army and local militias.

The statement issued by the office of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said that it was found that it was necessary to declare a state of emergency due to the increasing number of armed attacks in the region.

The fighting that broke out in the second most populous region in Ethiopia earlier this week between the Fano fighters and the Ethiopian security forces resulted in the loss of many lives.

The region has been in turmoil since April, when the country's authorities attempted to disarm the Amhara security forces after ending a two-year war in the neighboring Amharic region of Tigray.

Last year, the authorities also tried to disperse the Amhara militia known as Fano.

This week, residents reported fighting across the Amhara region as gunmen attacked army units and blocked roads.

Flights to the two main tourist cities, Lalibela and Gondar, have been suspended. with the interruption of Internet communication sources, according to reports.
