The Nigerian Union of Trade Unions has suspended its planned nationwide strike over the withdrawal of fuel subsidies.
Festus Osifo, the head of the TUC, made this known during an interview with Arise News on Thursday morning.
He said they took the decision after the meeting of the leaders of the union with President Bola Tinubu, who indicated that he will look into the demands of the union and take immediate action.
That is why he said that the union has suspended the strike that it planned to conduct on Thursday.
On Wednesday, the group started holding demonstrations across the country to show their displeasure over the government's decision to withdraw fuel subsidies.
On its part, the Presidency of Nigeria issued a statement on Wednesday night, in which it explains the progress it says was achieved as a result of the meeting between the leaders of the trade union and the President of the country at the Government House in Abuja.
The statement added that the president will study the demands presented to him by the leaders of the union during the meeting, in order to stop the protest that the union is starting on Wednesday.
President Tinubu assured the trade union that the Fatakwal oil refineries will start working next December, after the completion of their renovation work, by the national oil company NNPCL in collaboration with Maire Tecnimont SpA of Italy.
The announcement also mentions the president assuring the leaders of the union that he will continue to work to move the country forward, and he called on the leaders to join hands with him to provide the country with a positive economic environment.
