The Niger army asked for Russia's help
The Associated Press news agency said that the leader of the coup, General Salifou Mody, presented the request to the Russian army during a visit to Mali.
Niger's army asked for help from the Russian-owned Wagner security company just as the mandate given by West African leaders to return the ousted leader to his seat is coming to an end this Sunday.
While concluding his visit to the country of Mali which is led by the military coup on Friday, General Mody of Niger, warned against the attempt to send the ECOWAS military to attack them, saying Niger will do everything possible to protect itself from becoming a new Libyan country.
The soldiers have a few hours before the seven-day deadline set for them to release President Bazoum who they say they are holding hostage and return him to his post. If they fail to do so, ECOWAS member states can use force to deal with the Niger army.
