Tinubu Informs Parliament of ECOWAS's Plan to Send Troops to Niger
Nigeria has already stopped supplying Niger with electricity and the importation of goods.
The President of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, informed the National Assembly of the series of measures taken by the ECOWAS group of West African countries after the military coup in Niger.
Among the measures, ECOWAS plans to send troops to Niger if necessary.
On the 26th, the army guarding the presidential palace overthrew the government of Mohamed Bazoum and detained him.
Shortly after the coup, ECOWAS imposed sanctions on the country.
Nigeria has already stopped supplying Niger with electricity and the importation of goods.
Exports to the country have also been suspended, which has reportedly led to an increase in the price of commodities.
ECOWAS and the African Union, the United Nations and countries such as the United States, have asked the military to restore Bazoum's government and return to the military barracks.
But it seems that the soldiers refused to obey the order.
On Thursday, Tinubu who is the president of ECOWAS, sent a team led by the former military leader of Nigeria, General Abdulsalam Abubakar and the Sultan of Islam Muhammad Abubakar Sa'ad III to intervene.
But the team returned home without meeting with the coup leader General Abdourahame Tchiani and President Bazoum.
The Ministry of Defense of Nigeria on Thursday said that it has not yet been given the order to send troops to Niger.
