he Security Committee of the Economic Development Organization of West Africa, ECOWAS, which includes the military chiefs of some West African countries, said on Friday that they will use the diplomatic system to mediate in the Republic of Niger over the military coup in the country.
The security chiefs of Togo, Sierra Leone, Senegal, Nigeria, Ghana, Liberia, Guinea Bissau, The Gambia, Cote'Ivoire, Cape Verde and the Republic of Benin stated this at the end of their two-day meeting on Friday.
The meeting which started last Wednesday, which was chaired by the head of ECOWAS at the security headquarters in Abuja, General Christopher Musa, reports say that the soldiers of Mali, Niger, Guinea and Burkina Faso have abandoned it.
While reading the announcement of the meeting to the press, General Musa said that they have decided to intensify their engagement with all stakeholders, and to ensure dialogue and negotiation in dealing with the crisis in the Republic of Niger.
He said there have been about eight to nine successful coups in West Africa in the last three years, where he said all ECOWAS members were democratically elected leaders before three years ago.
Musah said that, in recent days, the threat of the military in West Africa has been revealed, saying that efforts must be made to control the situation before it becomes an issue for African countries and the whole world.
He said the meeting of the chiefs of defense was based on the principle of conflict resolution, reconciliation, peace and security, which was approved in 1999 and signed by all the member states. in the year 2001.
"So we will win, but diplomatically, and as we have said, the option of using military force is the last option for the discussion. And if we can avoid that, peaceful discussion is the easiest, but we have to do the Shirin no matter what.
"It is time to look back at ECOWAS that will show that it is a principled organization, we are sovereign countries based on the rule of law; We will not allow the law that uses the democratic system to be replaced by threats," said Musa.
