We Will Enter Niger' If Peace Is Failed - ECOWAS
ECOWAS is ready to intervene through military force in Niger if the diplomatic efforts to end the coup attempt in the country fail, as a senior official told the army chiefs meeting in Ghana in on Thursday.
WASHINGTON, D.C. - ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security Abdel-Fatau Musah has accused the military junta that overthrew President Mohamed Bazoum on July 26 of "pull me-in-pull you" with the group by refusing to meet with representatives and seeking justification for usurping power.
"The military and civil forces of West Africa are ready to respond to the call of action," as he told the security chiefs of the countries of the group.
He cited previous military operations by ECOWAS in The Gambia, Liberia and elsewhere as examples of preparedness.
He said "if the push goes to the wall, we will enter Niger with our forces and equipment to ensure that we restore the constitution of the country. If other democratic friends want to support us, we welcome them."
Musah strongly criticized the military government's announcement that it has the resources to prosecute Bazoum who is being held in court for treason. The United Nations, the European Union and ECOWAS have all expressed their concern over his condition in detention.
"The strange thing is that the person who is being detained ... and that he is accused of treason, what is on everyone's mind is when he committed the crime of treason," said Musah.
