Zuma was released from prison due to overcrowding

The former president of South Africa, Jacob Zuma avoided further prison terms, after being pardoned.

Such amnesty is given to people who will not be a threat to security.

Justice Minister Ronald Lamola told the media that the move was made to reduce overcrowding in prisons. He said that the operation started from April.

Zuma surrendered at Escout Prison in KwaZulu-Natal on Friday morning and was received by the authorities.

An hour later he was released on parole.

President Cyril Ramaphosa approved the pardon for 9,000 prisoners who the authorities have confirmed do not pose a threat to national security.

In June 2021, Zuma was sentenced to 15 months in prison, after being arrested for refusing to accept the invitation of the court investigating his reign.

He was later released from prison so that he could see a doctor, after being detained for two months.
