Gunmen shoot a soccer player in Panama

A Panamanian football player was shot in the city of Colón.

Gunmen opened fire on a group of people, including Gilberto Hernández, 26, who was inside a building in the city.

Hernández died and eight more people were injured in the attack.

However, there is no confirmation that the player, who plays for Atlético Independiente, was the target of the attack.

There has been an increase in the number of people being killed in Colón in recent months, as two gangs battle each other for control of the drug-trafficking areas.

So far, more than 50 people have been killed in Colón, a city of 40,000 people this year.

The city in the north of Panama, used to be the route used to transport drugs from South America to Panama and then on to Europe.

The incident happened on Sunday.

Two gunmen harassed a taxi driver who took them to a place adjacent to the city of Barrio Norte, where they opened fire on the people who had gathered.

Gilberto Hernández made his debut for the Panamanian football team in March of this year, in a match against Guatemala.

The father of the player demanded that the leader of the youth of Colón "stop this violence", where he called on the authorities to launch an investigation to find the culprits.
