Abigail Marshall-Katung Makes History As Mayor of Leeds
She will make history in May, after her colleagues elected her as the Mayor of Leeds in the UK.
Abigail Marshall-Katung has been elected as the 130th Mayor of Leeds - and will be the first woman from Africa to hold the prestigious post.
The 48-year-old said she was "honoured and humbled" to accept the job, which comes after five years of service at Leeds City Council.
She will make history in May, after being voted in by her colleagues.
Abigail was born in Nigeria before moving to Leeds to study politics in 2000.
It was then that she discovered her love for the town which made her return to the local government.
She vowed to "continue the fight for equality and social justice" as mayor, which she started when she was elected to represent Little London and Woodhouse in 2019.
Her husband Sunday Marshall-Katung is also a politician, who became a senator in Nigeria.
Abigail will take over from Al Garthwaite, the Labor MP for Headingley and Hyde Park ward, who was elected mayor of Leeds last year.
She succeeds Eileen Taylor, who became the first black woman to hold the office of mayor in 2019.
