Four of Iran's top military commanders have been killed in what is suspected to be an airstrike in Damascus, the capital of Syria.

Iran's Revolutionary Guards claimed responsibility for the attack on Israel, which it said killed four of its military advisers and several Syrian soldiers.

For its part, Israel - which has been attacking Iran-linked groups in Syria for years - has not said anything about the attack.

The attacks intensified after the start of the war between Israel and Hamas on October 7.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iran said that the attacks were an "act of war" on the part of Israel, calling on the international community to condemn the attacks.

Major Iranian Revolutionary Forces have been in Syria since the country's civil war began in 2011, helping Bashar al-Assad's government fight against separatist groups.
