Democracy has failed in Africa - Obasanjo
Former Nigerian President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, has said that democracy has failed to bring development to the African continent.
He said the system has failed because its content is not in line with the culture, way of life on the continent and the beliefs of the people of the continent.
Obasanjo made this known in Abuja, the Nigerian capital, at a function to mark the 60th birthday of former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Emeka Ihedioha.
The former president noted that if we look at how former US President, Abraham Lincoln, defined democracy as a government of the people, by the people, for the people.
He added that it is a system that benefits everyone, not a section of the population or a few individuals.
Obasanjo also explained that before the advent of Western democracy, Africa had its own system of governance that catered to the needs of all.
According to him, this system is democracy, not what is called democracy today which allows leaders to take whatever they want illegally and through corruption and tell people to go to court if they have a grievance.
